I have been doing this for 4 years. I have tried all sorts of techniques to deal with hateful comments. In my experience “don’t feed the trolls” is a giant, stinky myth. I would say “don’t stoop to their level” is much better advice.

Once I started responding with a civil tongue and impenetrable logic, the number of hateful messages decreased dramatically. The trolls you see me post are pretty much the only ones I get. Maybe 2 or 3 per week. I used to get 2 or 3 per day and I had half as many followers at that time. 

If you don’t respond at all, they tend to keep sending you messages until they get a reaction. If you respond to them by cursing them out and calling them names, they will get exactly the kind of attention they desire and they won’t stop until they have completely dismantled your composure. If you make them appear foolish in a clever and civil manner, they almost never write back again and I believe it makes others think twice about sending hate. 

I don’t like bullies. I refuse to ignore them and just swallow the hatred. This is how I deal with them and I hope folks can respect and understand that.
